Welcome to The Wild Palette by MM
A space where art becomes story, and tradition meets nature.
MM is a contemporary artist based in Western Australia. Her soulful works seamlessly weave Japanese cultural symbolism with the wild beauty of Australia, each piece carrying a quiet story that transcends cultures.
The Wild Palette is more than an art studio—it is a cross-cultural journey. Today, it begins with paintings; tomorrow, it will grow into creative experiences—such as origami workshops—that share the gentle spirit of Japanese and Australian culture.

Japanese Culture
Japanese Motifs & Meaning
The cultural symbols and emotional depth of Japan deeply inspire my art. I do not seek to copy tradition, but to converse with it—bringing ancient motifs into a contemporary voice.
🌸 Sakura
Sakura blossoms symbolize transience, renewal, and the quiet beauty of impermanence. In my paintings, I often pair sakura with the Kanji 桜, capturing both the delicate dance of petals and the fleeting passage of seasons.
👹 Oni & 魂
Oni are powerful figures from Japanese folklore—often misunderstood as demons, yet filled with emotional symbolism. I paint oni-inspired faces to explore the soul (魂) behind the mask: the hidden emotions we all carry, from joy and kindness to envy and sorrow.
🈶 Kanji
Each Kanji character I choose is more than a symbol—it is the heartbeat of the painting. Carefully selected, these characters express the spirit, emotion, or story woven into the artwork. For me, Kanji gives language to feeling.
Through these motifs, I invite viewers to pause, reflect, and experience the quiet power of cultural storytelling.

Australian Nature-Wildlife
Birds & Ocean Through a Japanese Lens
Western Australia’s nature is full of quiet wonder. I paint birds and ocean scenes not only for their beauty, but for the emotions they carry—freedom, rhythm, and connection. These works are specifically created with Japanese audiences in mind, offering a glimpse into Australian life through a poetic and culturally sensitive lens.
🕊️ Birds
From cockatoos to fairy-wrens, each bird I paint holds its own story. Their posture, color, and movement reflect emotion—sometimes joy, sometimes solitude. I imagine how these birds might be seen through Japanese eyes: as messengers, symbols of the seasons, or quiet companions on life’s journey.
🌊 Ocean
The Indian Ocean, Western Australia’s coast is breathtaking—endless, powerful, and deeply moving. For me, it is more than scenery; it is a reminder of journeys, distance, and connection. My paintings reflect the rhythm of its waves, the strength of marine life, and the softness of underwater light.
